NURS-B 235: Promoting Healthy Populations Practicum is a sophomore level course in the nursing major. Students are grouped in sections of ten students and led by one faculty member in completing this service learning based practicum course. This course is a co-requisite course to NURS-B 234: Promoting Healthy Populations. In the B 234 didactic course students learn concepts that tie into the experiences they are immersed in during their service learning component. Each NURS-B 235 section of students completes their service learning with a pre-identified community partner. Students will complete a health promotion based service learning project along with several knowledge application activities in the communities surrounding IU Indianapolis. The service learning project is in collaboration with community partners. The students will provide a health promotion based service activity at locations identified by the community partners. The locations are primarily elementary schools, or afterschool programs for elementary aged children. This service learning experience immerses the students into real-world settings when they provide a needed service to the community partners. While completing the service throughout this course, students will integrate the knowledge from past experiences as well as knowledge learned in the didactic co-requisite course and apply that knowledge to the service they are providing.
