The Life-Health Sciences Internship Program (LHSI) is an introductory, paid internship experience for 75 second and third year IU Indianapolis undergraduates per academic year. Internships are academically-relevant engaged learning opportunities for students to connect classroom learning, practical experience, and career exploration in a professional setting. Interns gain transferable skills, learn about career options, and explore their own professional identity. In addition to 10 hours of work per week, interns participate in professional development to make sense of what they are learning and engage with their internship peers. LHSI reflection is centered on the electronic Personal Development Plan, a guided electronic portfolio. Interns complete prompts in the fall and spring to track their own growth and reflect on what they are learning and experiencing throughout the year. LHSI is open to all majors and a typical year has representation from 8 academic schools and 20 majors. The sites are located in the graduate and professional health-related programs and hospitals on campus. Interns work with faculty and staff outside their “home” school, which both connects them to new networks and highlights the interdisciplinary nature of health-related fields. These professional, research, and clinical settings give interns a first professional experience and foundational skills.
