The Area Manager provides high-level support to professional staff members and manages one of six operational areas within the department. A student will have typically worked at least two semesters before stepping into the Area Manager role. Students must apply and interview for the Area Manager role and must have previously demonstrated excellence in their “entry-level” CCSE position. Area Managers directly support one of the following operational areas within CCSE: Civic Engagement, Event Services, Game Room, Information Desk, Operations and Student Activities. Area Managers gain valuable experience in assessing staffing needs, hiring, training, coordinating work schedules, planning and executing meetings, addressing work performance issues, and conducting work performance evaluation. They also learn how to assess the operations of their area, identify needs for improvement, and develop and implement procedural changes. The work of the Area Managers not only supports CCSE student team members (area teams range in size from 5 to 30 students) but also supports the IU Indianapolis campus at large. These students are the ones setting up meeting rooms and event spaces; coordinating reservations; responding to visitors’ questions via phone or email, or in-person at a service desk; coordinating the check-out and check-in of gaming equipment; helping student organizations register and promote events; planning alternative break experiences; assisting with emergency procedures; and keeping the Campus Center functioning. The Area Managers are critical in developing a work culture that provides meaning to those daily tasks and ensuring that their team members are supporting the greater mission of the University.
