The purpose of this course is to provide undergraduate students with a basic understanding of the research processes used to conduct research in Africana Studies and allied disciplines. It also helps students to think about ways to relate research topics and projects seemingly unrelated to people of African descent. During this course, students will engage with community members to understand a problem or concern they present. Students will be part of group that will focus on one component of the research proposal, including the Institutional Review Board, IRB process. This focused component could be the Abstract/Introduction, Literature Review, Research Methods, or Project Projections. Each focused component will have specific tasks to complete. For example, the Research Methods Group will explain the theoretical framework, population, sampling, and finalize survey/interview questions, to name a few tasks. Throughout the semester, students will continue to consult with community members. At the end of the semester, students will present the research proposal to community members as a class.
